How to submit your writing, art, photos and youth art and poetry |
|
RM pays $100 for a cover shot we publish. Gotta be good. Vertical, very high rez, simple but strong composition, with the upper right corner clear and light so I can overprint for some of the co-ops that use a message.
Also cowboys, maybe powwow. Give me moving horses, straight-on, dust, dramatic lighting. Powerful landscapes. Like that. For the summer of 2010, we're looking for abstracts and will feature an abstract cover that says Montana. Which is to say . . .
We're always looking for very Montana photos, something that's good will inspire us to find a way to use it, no matter what the category or subject.
Whatever you do, send only your best. If I get something that works inside on other than reader photo page, I'll pay $25-$50, depending on quality and use, plus the $10 for Reader Photo Page, if published. There's no point in sending 300 bad images. Quantity never trumps quality.
Now. We've been getting static from folks for asking them to put their name and address on every submission. It's in your interest to do so. When it comes time to request a check for the winners we don't have to search through stacks and files, either paper, CD or electronic. And. It's in our interest, because we don't have to search . . . yadda, yadda. We admit it, we're bad filers of info. But we pay on time . . . when we have the address. Not to belabor the point, but . . .
Hey, it's a simple requirement. It's common to all sorts of contests. It's a standard within the publishing industry for art, writing and photos. Even the pros have to do it. Believe me, we get lots of pros submitting to us, and they do it without argument. So, please. Name and address on every submission. Phone number is a good idea so we can follow up. We don't sell your name or address to other lists. We're lucky if we can find your name when it comes time to pay off our contributors.
The pros almost always send proof sheets with CDs, with thumbnail-sized images, so we can see at a glance what's on the disk. That's just one more reason why the pros get published more often.
Oh, and some contributors become petulant because we ask for name and address on every submission. Take this mini-poll: Do you seriously think it helps your chances to have your images selected when you chew out the staff responsible for judging your entry? You're asking why we don't have a filing system devoted to keeping track of you? I mean, seriously.
Hope this helps.
Send your submissions via email: rural@mtco-ops.com and tell us in the subject line what you're shooting for: Reader Photo, Reader Forum, Recipes, Young Montanans, Twitter Photo, Reader Twitter. Like that.
Or use the Postal Service: Rural Montana Let's hear from you. And do include that name, address, phone with every submission.
Please.
