About our cover . . .
This photograph of a waterway that
feeds the west side of the Nine
Pipes National Wildlife Refuge near
Ronan caught our eye due to the
contrast and sharp lines. In the win-
ter, the creek resembles an ice high-
way — one that critters apparently
use judging by the footprints seen
in the photo. Photographer Steve
Mitchell said this beautiful scene
only occurs in the coldest months,
as the whole area is under water in
the summer months.

Even the elk are yelling as the temperatures dip and autumn starts giving way to
winter. Or, on second thought, maybe this big fella was just looking for a girl-
friend. Either way, it makes for an impressive shot by Brett Swain of Kalispell,
who found this bull elk in Yellowstone National Park, near the Gardner River
Bridge. It was taken in late September, during the elk rut peak. For those hoping
to capture a similar shot, Swain used a Canon 7D camera with a Canon 500mm
lens, and the manual settings of: aperture 7.1, ISO 400, shutter 1/500.
